Carmen Smith can be ever so delicate or ever so feisty. She
can sound heavenly and angelic or as husky and sassy as she feels, but
you’re never bored listening to her voice floating around you.
Carmen Smith is currently staring as Mimi Marquez, a nineteen-year-old junkie and S&M dancer in Rent,
which opens at the IO Myer Studio in Kengsington on June 27.

A Sydney based artist who’s talent has been turning many a
head supporting internationals Roachford, Rahsaan Patterson and local acts Diesel in which she
supported and added her vocal to his new DVD (Coat hanger Antennae- Live @
The Vanguard). Other supports include Wendy Matthews, Jon Stevens, and
Casey Donovan. She has also toured the country with Guy Sebastian (2004
Beautiful Life tour), The Young Divas (2006- currently) Deni
Hines and featured on hip hop artist FiggKidd’s
debut release “This Is FiggKidd”.You may know
Carmen’s voice from the catchy Channel 10 promotion “What I like about you”
that was played year round in 2006.
Yet, it is in the song-writing realm that Carmen has gained
much respect with many of her songs landing on “Idol” albums such as Casey
Donovan (2004 Australian Idol winner), Kate DeArougo
(2005 Australian Idol winner), Rosita Vai (2005
New Zealand Idol winner) and Ricki Lee (Top 12
finalist)
Growing publishing credits aside, it’s Carmen’s own signature
sound that’s destined to hit home. Her soulful yet unique voice and lyrics
that everyone can relate to, make Carmen a must see. She has just finished
her self-titled, independent debut release, in which she co produced and
wrote. “My music, voice and songs reflect the person I am, easy going,
happy and honest”

“My music is soulful, everyday
people pop. Easy, free, happy honest music that is universally understood,
with a soul twist. Real live instruments so you think you are with me all
the way. This is every side and angle of me, Carmen Smith.”

Dear Blog,
I love playing Angel. It has been a real challenge on many
levels, throwing me outside of my comfort zone.
Speaking of comfort, there is one thing I don’t necessarily
like about playing Angel. The shoes.
|
|
The first time I had ever worn heels in my life was for our
video shoot, I thought it was something I could handle. Sure, I could
handle them for the first three hours, but once you go past that length of
time, and are running up and down the back streets of Surry Hills, it
starts to hurt. Seven hours later, when I finally got to take them off, I
felt so much sympathy for my feet it was unbelievable.
To all my friends who wear heels out of a night, I FEEL YOUR
PAIN!!
Now that I have been rehearsing in the heels, however, they
have become a lot easier to manage.
So expect to see me jumping on and off tables with relative
ease, as I have become one with the heels that once sought after my literal
downfall!
Angel and his heels are one!

Last night was our Cast Gala. I’d like to give a big thank you
to everyone who came and supported us. It was great to see so many friendly
faces and it was wonderful to be approached by audience members after the
show and hear their thoughts and have a chat about Rent.
We all had a ball playing around with different songs and I’m
sure everyone would agree the highlight of the night was Carmen Smith and
Mark Chamberlain having a jam with ‘Out Tonight’ and creating a blues
rendition of the song and the acoustic interpretation of ‘I’ll Cover You’ in
which Nick Pes accompanied Brad Dylan and Lloyd
Harvey.
Keep an eye out on the media page for some pictures and quite
possibly some video footage.

Hi all, it’s week six of rehearsals and what a ball we are having.
After a few great hours on Sunday blocking Goodbye Love I can
strongly say the characters are definitely alive within our actors. It was
quite difficult to hold back the tears welling in my eyes as I watched their
passion and emotion grow. I am sure you will all be intrigued to delve into
the lives of these amazing characters as much as I am. I think I speak for
everyone when I say the more we rehearse the greater our love and admiration
for these people grow.
Rent seems to have the ability to consume you, It really is a
show that touches the heart and if nothing else I hope that everyone who
witnesses this show feel a little inspired. It is hard not to after watching
these amazing performers get in touch with such a passionate community.
It is great to be working on a show and with a group of people
that you enjoy being with and can’t wait until each and every rehearsal.
So thank you to all the cast and crew for making this process so
enjoyable.
Stay tuned to hear about cast member’s gigs and more show
updates.

Welcome to the website! It’s finally great
to get Rent off its feet. My crew and I have been in pre-production for Rent
for almost a year now and to finally have a cast and be getting into the
enjoyable but daunting process of rehearsals is exciting and surreal.
When we were creating this website we wanted
to have a space where audience members can come and be apart of our Rent
family and see an insight to the process of creating theatre. It’s also a
place where our cast can share their thoughts and feelings and you can stay
up to date with the characters and the show.
I hope that you enjoy Rent as much as we
have enjoyed bringing it to the stage. Thanks for your support and we shall
see you in the theatre!
